Drawing experiments

2023 07 Design Play

Messing around in my sketchbook. The aim was to combine both random and calculated shapes using a reduced colour palette. I like both orientations but possibly the landscape one slightly more.

A bit of time out

It’s been a stressful week so it seemed like a good time to take a few minutes away from other people to mess about in the studio with some loud music, a bit of paper and some pens. Going through … Continue reading

Abstracting a design

This week I’ve been building resources in my sketchbook. An A5 pencil sketch of TV remote controls sitting on my cutting mat was followed by a closer view of a specific area in Sharpie pen. I picked these as my … Continue reading

Project: trees

Having been in a very restrictive lock-down situation, due to increasing numbers of covid 19 cases in our state, I’ve been close to home for over 10 weeks now without a definite end in sight; possibly some small relaxation of … Continue reading

Linocut: Lamb’s Tongue weed

This year, whilst in covid lockdown, I’ve spent a lot of time walking in bushland both observing and collecting flora, mainly weeds. A few weeks ago I started photographing Lamb’s Tongue weeds (Plantago lanceolata). They have a robust cylindrical shaped … Continue reading

Continuing drawing figures

I’ve continued working on drawing fashion figures.  Referring to my text book, I’ve produced a couple of line drawings demonstrating different poses.  Using one as a template I went on to complete a body shape. I’m in two minds about … Continue reading

New challenges in drawing

I’ve had a project in mind for a while now but know my drawing skills aren’t up to the job so I’ve bitten the bullet, invested in some basic drawing books and picked up a pencil. I love fashion illustration … Continue reading

Exploring Mixed Media: 6

Masks, Stencils & Monoprinting . . . with a bit of painting and drawing. A fairly good result.  Perhaps a little less colour in the upper background would have been better.  The buds have more orange and colour variation that … Continue reading

Challenge 30 – Day 17

A long gap since my last sketch of Jack but this one hasn’t come out too badly. Despite not having drawn him for around 6 weeks I’m pleased that I’ve retained some of the improvement I made by concentrating on … Continue reading

Challenge 30 – Day 16

Short of time today but at least I’ve got the outline down.  The head is definitely a better shape than the previous drawing.

Challenge 30 – Day 15

Nose is too long and a bit narrow.  He looks more like a foxhound.  I think I need a close-up photo and draw larger to get the proportions.  Good movement though. An update on day 14 as I added the … Continue reading

Challenge 30 – Day 14

Not sure how to draw water but it’s a start.  I’ve done a bit of shadow but it should probably have been extended under his belly as well.

Challenge 30 – Day 11

Day 10 drawing was more puppy-like with a shorter nose.  Today I’ve achieved an older dog impression and the facial proportions are much better.  This actually starts to resemble Jack (minus the body markings obviously).

Challenge 30 – Day 10

I can honestly say this is one of the hardest things I’ve done in my creative life.  I’m a third of the way through my challenge and progress is spotty.  Occasionally I seem to get a rough (very rough) likeness … Continue reading

Challenge 30 – Day 5

Terrible photography as the light is going. Took a new approach today and used a large piece of butchers paper (A3 + a bit) and vaguely scribbled this out until I got to the face detail.  This poor dog has … Continue reading

Challenge 30 – Day 4

I can see the distance from eyes to nose is too short.  Possibly something to do with the angle I’m working at?  Think I’ll try drawing on an incline tomorrow.

Challenge 30 – Day 3

After 3 days I can say that I’m consistent in my heavy handed approach.  I need to search for some tuition to improve.  Time to troll the net for guidance, as I’m seriously doing this dog a disservice!

Drawing: A bit more nature

Drawing: A bit of nature

Having used alcohol inks to colour some thick textural hand-made paper I decided to use them to make a criss-cross accordion book which I’m doing for my on-line flexible book structures course.  But, as I’m keen to practice my drawing, … Continue reading

Drawing: More precise ‘Line’ figures

I’m currently reading about forming habits, decision-making and how to work faster, smarter and better (probably sounds super-boring to you, but fascinating to me).  Some of the main points cover independence, exploration and the rewards of achievement. With my new … Continue reading

Drawing: More ‘Shrink & Line’ Figures

Enjoying just messing around for a few minutes when I get time. Whilst these are pretty rough, along with some of my previous ones, some provide a reasonable start point for  tracing and turning into prints.

Drawing: ‘Shrink & Line’ figures

Still drawing – just differently ……….

I’ve just attended my first Adobe Illustrator course (seriously need this skill for work).  Wow, masses to learn.  After 7 hours tuition I reckon I’ve almost scratched the surface. Daunted?  Hell, yes! Excited?  Definitely! Know what I’m doing?  Not even … Continue reading
