The goal: to turn solid shapes into line drawings and create variations on the theme.

Part 1
For one day only, late last week, my Walking Irises came into full bloom.  I had a sea of green, white and purple until they withered that evening.

After a review of my photos I drew the basic flower which I based on a triangular shape, but the angles felt too sharp.  Still being in my Linear Containment phase and recently working with rectangles, I reworked the flowers to my liking.

Never having got along very well with my set of Inktense pencils it was time to have a go at applying colour.  After a couple of attempts to get even coverage I finally worked out how to ‘paint’ with these pencils and the top right image has come out fairly well.

Part 2
I spied a small tray of paper clips.  What could be more simple than a line drawing and playing with distorting the shape?

Faintly frog-spawn like, although I have another idea.  I’ve always loved Grevilleas and have even painted a couple in the past.  How about a Grevillea constructed with distorted paper clips?

Part 3
I’ve a fascination with how people draw glass and last year, whilst on a short drawing class, my tutor managed to drag out of me a fairly decent attempt – shown here to the left.  White chalk on black paper.

So I thought it time to have another go.

With my extreme stylisation in the two sections above I decided to stay in that vein – weird though that may appear.

Firstly, I note that, despite how careful I was, my vase is leaning to the right, exactly as per all the glasses I drew earlier in the year.

As this exercise is all about line drawing I’ve translated the reflections of light I see along one side of the vase into blocks.  I’m particularly pleased with the drawing on the right.

I have a germ of an idea brewing for these images and it’s time to put a composition together and get it etched on to a printing plate.
