Collaged Monoprint

In a recent workshop with (the amazing) Glen Skein we were each given a package of materials to collage. The guidelines were:

  • No addition of a base matrix.
  • No gluing. Narrow masking tape was provided to piece elements together.
  • Minimal addition of other materials.
  • Not everything provided had to be included.

The assembled collage was placed face down on a sheet of inked Mylar and run through the press with a waste sheet over the top.

Left: the collage after running through the press. Right: the waste paper print.

The Mylar plate was then printed, thereby lifting the ghostly image remaining in the ink.

Materials and techniques I used:
Cartridge paper with cutouts, thin cord, tarlatan, texture paste, scrim threads, masking tape.
Lacy fabric was pressed into the texture paste on the silhouette to create a pattern, paper was folded as can be seen top right.
Sakura oil-based ink, 250gsm Arches paper.

It’s such an interesting way of creating prints, making stand alone collages which end up as ghostly images. I’ve done many monoprints and this particular collaging method has produced a new outcome for me.
