I can honestly say this is one of the hardest things I’ve done in my creative life. I’m a third of the way through my challenge and progress is spotty. Occasionally I seem to get a rough (very rough) likeness to Jack but mostly I’m getting something dog-like but not really him. As each component takes so long it’s rare that I get as far as a whole dog.
I’ve committed to 30 drawings and that’s what I’ll do but this is truly agonising.
This may be missing the point, but could you vary or experiment with the type of drawing? For example, something more scribbly that focuses on getting movement rather than likeness.
Or maybe focus in – just how does that ear fold, or that patch of hair fall, or maybe can you get that mix and placement of colour using different pencils or paints…
Part of the idea behind this one was to do what you’ve suggested and focus on a smaller area. Hence the improvement on the eyes and nose area. I think these are the best eyes so far. The nose is a little wonky but the shading is better and the ears are the right size. Nose is too short and the whole expression is quite ‘staring’.
I’ve just been reading about ways to hold a pencil to get different effects and I’ll make a change and see if I can get a more sketchy look. I’ve added coloured pencils in on some days and that’s quite interesting, but paints? I hate painting and have even less experience with that than I do with drawing. At the most I might include a bit of water colour, possibly.
20 more to go so I’ve time to develop and change my mind.
