‘Other World’ Print Plates
In my post of 18th January I looked at both internal and external textures with a view to planning my Other World project print plates. The aim is to produce several small prints to be mounted as a set for my husband who loves space travel, the idea of ‘out there’ and science fiction that might even become reality one day (frankly, I can’t wait for the era of ‘Beam me up, Scottie’).
So, if you’ve been following my blog recently you will see it slowly starting to come together. I’ve created 3 collagraph plates and printing trials are underway. Here’s a look at, and explanation of, each of the plates (for those printmakers amongst you). If you’re not a printmaker, over the next few weeks you can enjoy trying to identify in which print each of the plates has been used.
PLATE 1
Mountboard, scrim, cardstock, carborundum suspended in PVA glue, shellac sealant
Inspiration:
Citrus peel soap (from Lush – everyone should try this!), rubber non-slip table covering, lacy curtains.
PLATE 2
Mountboard, embossed paper filled with modelling paste to stop collapsing, scrim, fabric trim, modelling paste, masking tape, shellac sealant
Inspiration:
Calendar photo, image of the week 14/1/2019.
PLATE 3
Mountboard, burned Tyvek, thick modelling paste, shellac sealant
Inspiration:
Top left, clockwise: polystyrene, rain droplets on fire grass, water drops on sink drainer, shallow water over rippled sand at the beach.
PLATES 4 & 5
Both plates: 400 grade sandpaper, light shellac sealant
Inspiration:
An innovative way to make ‘aquatint’ solid print plates by using sealed sandpaper instead.
some interesting outcomes there! I like Plate 2 – like an abstract landscape
Started the prints now, Kath. They’re looking great.
great! looking forward to seeing more
